Ms. Jackson’s marker lies pressed into the earth. Weeds and dirt had to be cleared away to see this much.

Daughter of James R. (teamster) and Emily Jackson (laundress). 1900 census finds her living with parents, brother Guy, sister Emma, and grandparents Joseph and Maria DeCossey.

1910: she’s living in her  widowed mother’s home with husband Sam Petway and a baby as-yet unnamed.

Her small stone lies face-up in the weeds.

Take a look at this recent BBC clip on a group of volunteers in Richmond, VA working to preserve East End Cemetery. Interesting similarities to the situation with Highland here in KC, no?

William L. Caldwell. This interesting, hand-lettered marker appears to be made of concrete. Both the engraved dates differ from that of the death certificate.

Died December 24, 1926, Kansas City, MO of cerebral hemorrhage.

Husband of Lizzie Caldwell. William was a Pullman porter. Son of Henry Caldwell and Amanda Glass.

Sometimes a family would give a grave to a friend if they died and had no preparations in place for burial. Clorinda’s marker hints at this. Also, both her given and surnames are misspelled.

In the 1920 US Federal Census, Clorinda is working in Stanley, Wisconsin as a maid in the home of George and Harriett Chapman.
